Charles R. “Charlie” Dueker, 78, of Effingham, passed away at 7:25 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at his home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Effingham, with the Rev. David McConnell officiating. Burial will be in Arborcrest Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hall Funeral Chapel, Effingham, and one hour before the funeral at the church on Saturday. Charles was born on Aug. 22, 1935, in Bible Grove Township, Clay County, the son of Arnold and Elda (Veith) Dueker. He married Shirley (Schwermin) Dueker on Dec. 1, 1962, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Teutopolis. She preceded him in death on June 30, 1973. He then married Phyllis Fae (Schmohe) Thomas on Sept. 26, 1975, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altamont, and she survives.
Charles was a 30 year employee of Illinois Consolidated Telephone Co., retiring in 1990. He was also a lifelong farmer, retiring on Feb. 17, 2014. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and also served in the Illinois National Guard. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Effingham.
Charles is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Effingham; son, Donnie (Jennifer) Dueker of Effingham; stepdaughter, Peggy (Mike) Stalling of West Mansfield, Ohio; stepson, Lyle (Kim) Thomas of Rolla, Mo.; grandchildren, Diana Dueker of Chicago, Daniel Thomas of Tulsa, Okla., and Jarrett Thomas of Rolla, Mo.; nieces, Rhonda Dueker of Effingham, and Misty (Dueker) Campos of Effingham; nephews, Kerry, Kurt and Kory Wolff, both of Altamont; and brother-in-law, Allen Wolff of Altamont.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley; brother, Leonard Dueker; and sister-in-law, Lois Wolff.
