Skip was born May 31, 1939, in Cowden, the son of Harvey and Lulu Sloat Beck. He married Doris Hodson in 1959. In 1993, he married Janet Hardiek. Skip was the sole proprietor of Beck`s Shell Service Station in Cowden from 1959 until 1984. He then was employed at Goeckner Brothers in Effingham as an auto tech until 2002, when he retired. He came out of retirement to become a greens keeper at the Cardinal Golf Course in Effingham from which he retired, for the last time, in 2011.

The New York Yankees is the only major league baseball team for which he ever rooted. One of the greatest thrills of his life was getting to attend a ball game in Yankee Stadium.

Skip was preceded in death by his son, Ronald Dean Beck, and his parents.
