---- — Arthur Eugene “Gene” McElravy, 93, of Jewett, passed away at 11:09 p.m. Saturday, June 29, 2013, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Jewett Community Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial with military rites conducted by Cumberland County Veterans will be in Jewett Cemetery. Barkley Funeral Chapel, Greenup, is assisting the family with arrangements. Gene was born Nov. 7, 1919, in Cumberland County, the son of Arthur and Chlora May (Sherrick) McElravy. He married Rosebud Decker on March 21, 1942. Gene was a lifelong farmer. He proudly served his country in the Army during World War II in Europe, he was with the 707 Tank Division at the Battle of the Bulge. He was member of the Greenup VFW Post 4598. He also served on the Jewett Village Board, the Cumberland School Board and the Farm Bureau Board. He was a hardworking man well into his nineties; he enjoyed fishing, cutting wood and riding his 4 wheeler around to check on the crops. He will be sadly missed by family and all who knew him.
Surviving is his loving wife of 71 years; sons, Randy (Sandy) McElravy of Greenup, and Jeff (Nancy) McElravy of Jewett; daughter, Vicki (Carl) Wellbaum of Jewett; brother, Bill (Dorothy) McElravy of Toledo; grandchildren, Eric (Kimberly) Wellbaum, Gail (Joe) Warner, Lyle Wellbaum, Scott (Kristal) McElravy, Greg (Angie) McElravy, Joni (Jason) Russell, Josh (DeDe) McElravy and Jay (Rayna) McElravy; and 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dale, Lee and John David McElravy; and sisters, Mary Dooley and Catherine Romack.
