---- — Hugh Fletcher Hays, 90, of Watson, died at 6:02 a.m. Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Lakeland Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Effingham.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hall Funeral Chapel, Effingham, with the Rev. Kent Robinson officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Burial with military rites will be in Watson Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Watson Cemetery or the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be left at www.hallfuneralchapel.com.
Hugh was born June 9, 1922, in Neoga, the son of Arthur F. and Nellie K. (Scammahorn) Hays. He married Hazel Givens on June 1, 1947, in Farina, and she survives. Hugh was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the European Theater of Operations in World War II. He was a member of Watson Baptist Church, Altamont VFW Post 7676, Effingham American Legion Post 120, Disabled American Veterans and retired from Crossroads Press in 1984. He enjoyed building and fixing things, going to garage sales and making people laugh with his quick wit and keen sense of humor.
Hugh is survived by his wife of 65 years, Hazel Hays of Watson; daughters, Debby Harris and Sherry Hays, both of Effingham, and Sandi Clouse (fiance, John Cantwell) of Bloomington, Ind.; son, Ron (Torrie) Hays of Edmond, Okla.; former son-in-law, Wendell Harris of Effingham; grandchildren, Barrett (Erin) Strole and Justin Strole of Bloomington, Ind., Chris Harris, Mindy (Jered) Pals and Kevin (Megan) Harris, all of Effingham, Dr. Tanner (Krystal) Hays of Edmond, Okla., Thad (Dr. Molly) Hays of Tulsa, Okla., and Zach Clouse, Kelsey Clouse and Shelby Clouse, all of Bloomington, Ind.; great-grandchildren, Morgan Strole, Noah Mulheron, Haydn Pope, Finley Pals, Rylan Pals, Jenner Pals, Eli Strole, Truett Pals, Rucker Harris, Easton Strole, Lorelai Hays and Cash Harris; sisters, Oma Higgs of Mason and Clementine (Leonard) Budde of Effingham; and several nieces and nephews.
Hugh was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ellen Hays, Edith Bahrns, Annabelle Spear, Eunice Budde and Loretta Curry; and brother, Guy Hays.
