Arthur J. Buhnerkempe, 81, of Sigel (Lillyville), went to be with the Lord at 1:40 a.m. Wednesday morning, July 31, 2013, in his home, surrounded by his loved ones.
Mass of Christian burial for Arthur will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lillyville. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Church Cemetery, Lillyville. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church with a 7 p.m. parish wake service immediately followed by a Teutopolis Knights of Columbus Rosary Council 2874. Arthur was born Sept. 27, 1931, in Cumberland County, the son of Edward and Agnes (Thoele) Buhnerkempe. He married Irene (Pat) Thoele on Aug. 8, 1953, and she survives.
Arthur was a lifelong dairy and grain farmer, lifetime member of Sacred Heart Church, Lillyville, member of Lillyville Men's Sodality, lifetime member of Teutopolis Knights of Columbus, Purple Martin Conservation Association, past seed corn dealer and 4-H leader. In his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid purple martin enthusiast and enjoyed gardening and reading. Arthur helped his boys on the family farm and enjoyed his collie dog.
Survivors include his wife, Irene; children, Dennis Buhnerkempe of Sigel, Judy (Kenny) Brummer of Dieterich, Roger (Tory) Buhnerkempe of Watson, Gary Buhnerkempe of Sigel, Gail (Terry) Esker of Effingham, Nancy (Dale) Buening of Sigel, Linda (Pete) Haslett of Indianapolis; 15 grandchildren, Michelle (Alan) Kollman, Brian (Sheryl) Brummer, Christy (Robert) Klinger, Bruce (Cara) Brummer, Greg (Kristen) Brummer, Matt (Candace) Brummer, Kyle Brummer, Travis (Julie) Buhnerkempe, Jake (Sarah) Buhnerkempe, Ben Esker, Blake Esker, Ellie Buening, Rachel Buening, Derek Haslett and Dylan Haslett; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Larry Buhnerkempe; and aunt, Delores Will of Teutopolis.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Laverne.
