Truck flips, pigs break loose

TARBORO, N.C. — A truckload of pigs on their way to market got a last-minute reprieve when it flipped, creating a scene along a rural U.S. highway.

The accident left dozens of hogs roaming the side of the road, but the swine’s stay was made more enjoyable when they discovered a muddy ditch nearby.

The driver of the tractor-trailer said the load shifted, causing the vehicle to leave he roadway. An investigating officer said he didn’t see any signs of high speed or reckless driving.

About 100 pigs were being transported on the truck at the time of the accident.

A volunteer firefighter who assisted in the clean up, said the pigs that made it to the ditch couldn’t have been happier. “I ain’t seen a hog yet that doesn’t like the mud,” he said. “That’s probably the dirtiest that hog’s been in his whole life,” pointing to one wallowing in the ditch.

The firefighters sprayed water from a fire hose onto the overturned tractor-trailer to give the contained sows some relief.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture was called in to determine the animals’ fate.
