---- — “Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!” Although you will not encounter such scary creatures in the center’s woodlands, you will see a troll. Watch youth from local Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops perform enactments of children’s fables and tales during this family program at Ballard Nature Center at 1 p.m. today, March 23. Solve riddles from the woodland fairies and play the exciting game of “Do You Know Your Fairy Tales?” Preregister at 618 483-6856 with a cost of $1 per person.

• The Family Friendly Committee of Developing Altamont’s Future is planning Welcome to Altamont bags and looking for donations of items to be included in the bags. Current projects of this committee are an online community calendar and promoting the German heritage of the Altamont area.

• Altamont Youth Sports Commission will hold its sign up for summer league baseball and softball today, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 24. This sign-up is for children entering kindergarten next year through those currently in eighth grade. The sign-up will be held at the batting cages in Gilbert Park.

• Altamont Legion Post 512 will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 26.

• Effingham County Home and Community Education Association will hold its annual Quilt Show at the Extension Center in Effingham from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, March 23. Admission is $3 and refreshments will be served. Those attending are asked to bring one non-perishable item to be donated to a local food pantry.
